Empowering Young People: Residential Trip to Bristol

A Transformative Experience for At-Risk Youth

In February 2025, we had the privilege of taking ten young Somali men from London on a life-changing residential trip to Bristol. This three-day programme, fully funded by the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), aimed to provide young people with a change of environment, opportunities for personal growth, and a sense of belonging.

The trip combined educational workshops, team-building activities, and recreational experiences to help young people develop essential life skills, build confidence, and strengthen relationships with their peers and mentors.

Key Highlights of the Trip

Workshop on Conflict Avoidance and Staying SafeBefore the trip, participants attended a conflict avoidance and knife crime awareness workshop.

This session provided them with valuable skills in:

✔ De-escalation techniques to avoid confrontations.

✔ Understanding peer pressure and the dangers of high-risk environments.

✔ Recognising the consequences of knife crime and making informed choices.

Participants found the real-life case studies particularly impactful, and many requested more role-play scenarios in future sessions to practise their skills.

Exploring Bristol and Building Connections

The trip began with a warm welcome in luxury apartments, giving participants a comfortable and safe space to relax.

Over the weekend, they took part in a variety of activities, including:

✅ Football matches – playing both amongst themselves and against a local team, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.

✅ Sightseeing tours – exploring Brandon Hill and Bristol Harbour, encouraging a love for travel and new experiences.

✅ Fine dining at a 4-star restaurant – an experience that helped develop confidence in social settings.

✅ Bowling and pool games – strengthening friendships through recreational activities.

✅ Reflection sessions – providing participants with the opportunity to open up and share their thoughts.

By the end of the trip, participants expressed a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity, stating that they felt more respected, cared for, and inspired to make positive life choices.

The Impact:

What Young People Had to Say

“This was the best weekend ever! It felt good to be away and just enjoy life.” – Participant

“I felt respected and cared for. The football match, the restaurant, everything was amazing.” – Participant”

I built stronger relationships with my friends and the staff. I wish we could do this more often.” – Participant

“The workshop taught me how to stay safe and avoid dangerous situations. I feel more confident now.”

– Workshop Participant Why These Programmes Matter.

This trip wasn’t just about having fun—it was about providing young people with a positive alternative to negative influences.

Many of the participants come from areas where crime and violence are real concerns. By taking them out of their everyday environment, we provided a safe space for growth, learning, and personal development.

Outcomes Achieved:

✔ Increased confidence & social skills

✔ Strengthened friendships & mentorship bonds

✔ Positive engagement away from negative influences

✔ Improved physical & mental well-being

✔ New conflict avoidance skills

Looking AheadThis trip was a huge success, and we hope to organise more residential programmes in the future.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with young people asking for follow-up sessions, more workshops, and further opportunities to travel and learn.

We are committed to empowering young people, building stronger communities, and creating safe spaces where they can thrive. With continued support, we can provide even more life-changing experiences like this one.
