Islington Safety Awareness Football Tournament

The Jubba Youth Community Association, in collaboration with Islington Council, organised a vibrant and impactful event, the Islington Safety Awareness Football Tournament, held at Rosemary Gardens Football Pitch. The event took place from 5 PM to 8 PM, uniting youth, community leaders, and families in promoting safety and positive community engagement.

The atmosphere was electric, with the energy and enthusiasm of the players matched by cheering families and friends, bringing the total attendance to approximately 35 people.

The event kicked off with a series of speeches that set the tone for the evening. Amin, a local community leader, delivered an inspiring message about making positive choices, taking decisive action to stay safe, and leading change within the community. He also addressed recent incidents affecting the Somali community in the borough, emphasising the importance of unity and proactive measures for safety.

Purpose and Activities

The primary goal of the event was to empower young people to make positive choices and foster a sense of community responsibility. This initiative is part of Islington Council’s ‘Standing Together’ fortnight, an initiative aimed at promoting safety awareness and proactive measures against violence and crime.

In addition to the football tournament, attendees enjoyed refreshments and participated in the “Staying Safe” workshop, which provided valuable insights and practical advice on personal and community safety.

Celebrating Success and Inspiring Future Leaders

The tournament concluded with Zakaria from Islington Council awarding the trophy and medals to the winning team, recognising their athletic achievements and the importance of teamwork, confidence, and healthy life choices. One of the participants summed up the spirit of the event, stating, “We need to have fun and keep our community together. That’s what we need, especially in the Somali community with what’s going on.”
